In a transformative step to bolster Punjab’s agricultural backbone, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled a Rs15 billion wheat package under the Wheat Support Fund, designed to uplift over 550,000 farmers. Announced during a high-level meeting addressing the challenges faced by wheat growers, this initiative marks a historic commitment to the province’s farming community.
“We stand shoulder to shoulder with our farmers, ensuring they thrive despite seasonal and market challenges,” CM Maryam Nawaz declared, emphasizing the government’s resolve to safeguard agricultural livelihoods.
The package introduces a multifaceted approach to farmer welfare. Through the Kisan Card, wheat growers will receive direct cash transfers to offset rising input costs, providing immediate financial relief. Additionally, farmers are exempt from fixed and excise taxes for the current season, easing their fiscal burden.
To shield harvests from unpredictable weather and market volatility, the government is offering four months of free storage. A pioneering Electronic Warehouse Receipt System will enable farmers to store wheat and obtain digital receipts, which can be used to secure bank loans worth up to 70% of the grain’s value within 24 hours. This innovative system empowers farmers with quick access to liquidity.
Further strengthening the financial ecosystem, the Punjab government will subsidize Rs5 billion in loan markups for wheat storage, while allocating Rs1 billion to support flour mills and green license holders in purchasing wheat. The Bank of Punjab will also finance private-sector warehouse construction and upgrades, with the government covering markup costs to enhance storage infrastructure.
In a bold policy shift, the ban on inter-provincial and inter-district wheat and flour movement has been lifted, fostering freer trade and better market access. The government is also pursuing federal approval to export wheat and wheat-based products, aiming to stabilize prices and manage surplus stocks effectively.
This comprehensive package not only delivers immediate relief but also lays the foundation for sustainable agricultural growth. By addressing both short-term needs and long-term challenges, Punjab’s leadership is redefining support for its farmers, ensuring they remain the cornerstone of the province’s economy. As CM Maryam Nawaz reiterated, “Our farmers are our strength, and their prosperity is our priority.”
