In a significant step toward sustainable urban mobility, the Punjab government has greenlit an innovative e-taxi project, with a pilot phase featuring 1,100 electric taxis and solar-powered charging infrastructure set to roll out in the near future. The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting led by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, which focused on advancing mass transit and eco-conscious transportation solutions across the province.
The meeting reviewed the financial framework for the e-taxi initiative, granting preliminary approval for its funding model. To ensure environmental sustainability, the project includes plans for solar-powered charging stations, aligning with Punjab’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions. The e-taxi scheme will also feature government subsidies to make the service accessible and affordable for both operators and passengers.
In addition to the e-taxi project, discussions covered the Yellow Line mass transit system, a key infrastructure project connecting Jinnah Terminal to Harbanspura. Chief Minister Sharif directed officials to prioritize public convenience when planning routes and urged immediate commencement of construction to expedite the project’s completion. Authorities were also tasked with exploring new mass transit routes in Gujranwala to enhance regional connectivity.
A notable proposal discussed during the meeting was the integration of e-taxi charging stations with existing petrol pumps, a move aimed at streamlining infrastructure development and maximizing accessibility. This innovative approach is expected to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in Punjab’s urban centers.
Chief Minister Sharif emphasized the importance of public-centric planning, instructing officials to design transportation systems that cater to the needs of commuters while promoting environmental stewardship. The e-taxi initiative is poised to set a precedent for green transportation in Pakistan, fostering cleaner cities and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
In a separate directive, the Chief Minister addressed a humanitarian concern, ordering free medical treatment for Pakistani patients recently returned from India due to strained bilateral relations. This measure ensures that those unable to complete their treatment abroad receive proper care in Punjab.
The e-taxi pilot, combined with the Yellow Line and other transit projects, marks a transformative phase in Punjab’s journey toward sustainable and inclusive urban development. As the province prepares to launch these initiatives, residents can look forward to a greener, more connected future.
