Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered a nationwide crackdown on sugar hoarders and profiteers, pledging to prevent price manipulation and ensure affordable sugar prices for the public. The announcement came during a high-level review meeting on Friday, amid growing concerns over escalating sugar costs in the country.
Expressing dismay over the artificial inflation of sugar prices, PM Shehbaz emphasized the government’s resolve to maintain fair pricing and protect consumers. “We will not allow speculation or hoarding to drive up sugar prices,” he declared, directing authorities to launch a swift and thorough operation against those responsible. The prime minister reassured the public that Pakistan has sufficient sugar stocks to meet demand, instructing officials to closely monitor supply chains and coordinate with sugar mills to prevent disruptions. “There is no shortage of sugar in the country,” he stated, urging stricter oversight to ensure stability in the market.
With the holy month of Ramadan underway, PM Shehbaz underscored the government’s commitment to shielding citizens from exploitation. “The public will not be left at the mercy of profiteers,” he said, calling on chief secretaries of all four provinces to enforce government-approved sugar prices without delay.
The directive, reported by the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), reflects the administration’s broader efforts to curb inflationary pressures and safeguard essential commodities during a time of heightened public need.
