DOHA: Hamad International Airport, crowned the World’s Best Airport and Airport Shopping by Skytrax 2024, has unveiled its new Concourses D and E, a landmark expansion that elevates its annual passenger capacity to over 65 million. The development, completed ahead of schedule, cements Doha’s role as a global aviation hub while enhancing traveler comfort and operational efficiency.
The project, which kicked off in 2018, wraps up a transformative phase that began with the 2022 opening of the ORCHARD—a 6,000-square-meter indoor tropical garden. The new concourses add 17 aircraft contact gates, bringing the total to 62, a 40% increase, and expand the terminal by 14% to 842,000 square meters. This reduces bus transfers and streamlines operations, meeting the rising demand for global connectivity.
Qatar Airways Group CEO Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer hailed the milestone: “This isn’t just about capacity—it’s about strengthening Qatar Airways’ network and supporting Qatar’s economic growth under the National Vision 2030.” He noted the project’s early completion despite global delays, crediting meticulous planning. Chief Operating Officer Hamad Ali Al Khater added, “Concourses D and E enhance passenger flow, optimize resources, and boost airline connectivity for smoother services.”
The concourses introduce smart technology, including self-boarding systems that cut wait times through swift document checks. Enhanced gate capacity paves the way for more direct routes, while upgraded amenities—like 2,700 square meters of new retail and dining space from Qatar Duty Free, featuring over 10 new outlets—elevate the passenger experience. Ergonomic seating and premium offerings cater to diverse needs, reinforcing the airport’s reputation as a shopping and dining destination.
Sustainability is at the core, with the concourses targeting GSAS 4-Star and LEED Gold certifications through energy-efficient systems, water management, and thermal comfort strategies. Accessibility shines with universal design—think hearing loops, barrier-free paths, and dedicated assistance—ensuring inclusivity for all travelers.
Beyond D and E, the broader expansion includes the ORCHARD’s serene greenery, an upgraded Central Concourse for better flow, and a revamped retail portfolio with global luxury brands. Hamad International Airport’s latest leap forward not only meets today’s demands but sets the stage for future growth, solidifying Qatar’s place on the aviation map.
