Karachi, April 18, 2025 – In a move to regulate food prices and safeguard consumers from unfair pricing practices, Karachi’s Commissioner, Syed Hassan Naqvi, has rolled out a new pricing structure for naan and chapati across the city. The initiative aims to bring consistency and affordability to these staple foods, widely consumed by residents.
New Price List for Naan and Chapati
The freshly issued notification outlines the following government-mandated prices:
- A 100-gram chapati will now cost Rs10.
- A 120-gram naan is priced at Rs15.
- A 150-gram naan will be sold for Rs17.
- A 180-gram naan is set at Rs22.
These prices are designed to curb inflated rates and ensure that tandoor owners adhere to a standardized pricing model, making these essentials accessible to all.
Strict Compliance Measures
Commissioner Naqvi has mandated that all tandoor and shop owners display the official price list prominently at their establishments. This step is intended to promote transparency and allow customers to verify prices easily. Non-compliance will not be tolerated, with the commissioner warning that overcharging or failure to display the price list will result in severe penalties.
To enforce these regulations, a dedicated control room has been established to handle complaints and monitor adherence to the new pricing rules. Residents are encouraged to report any instances of overpricing by contacting the control room at 021-99203443. “We are committed to taking swift action against those who violate these guidelines,” Naqvi stated, underscoring the administration’s focus on consumer protection.
Empowering Citizens
The commissioner has called on Karachi’s residents to play an active role in ensuring compliance by reporting any discrepancies in pricing. This collaborative approach aims to foster accountability and maintain fairness in the market. “Every shop must clearly display the official rates, and we urge citizens to stay vigilant,” Naqvi added.
This initiative reflects the city administration’s broader efforts to stabilize food prices and protect consumers amid economic challenges. By setting clear guidelines and establishing a system for oversight, Karachi’s leadership is taking proactive steps to ensure that staple foods remain affordable for all.
