On May 26, 2025, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Tehran, reaffirming Pakistan’s support for Iran’s peaceful nuclear program and emphasizing the deep cultural and historical ties between the two nations. The visit, part of a six-day diplomatic tour across Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Tajikistan, aimed to bolster regional partnerships amid ongoing tensions in South Asia.
In a joint press conference with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, Sharif expressed gratitude for Iran’s support during recent escalations with India. “Pakistan stands firmly with Iran, supporting its peaceful nuclear ambitions,” he said, describing Iran as a “second home.” He outlined plans to deepen bilateral ties through enhanced cooperation in trade, security, and regional development.
Sharif highlighted the potential for a free trade agreement, aiming to increase bilateral trade to $10 billion. “Our shared 900-kilometer border offers opportunities for economic growth, particularly in Balochistan and Sistan-Baluchestan,” he noted, emphasizing that such collaboration could also strengthen counter-terrorism efforts.
Addressing regional tensions, Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to resolving disputes with India, including the Kashmir issue, through dialogue and in accordance with UN resolutions. “Pakistan seeks peace, but we will respond decisively to any aggression,” he cautioned, referencing the recent ceasefire with India.
President Pezeshkian called for dialogue between Pakistan and India to resolve their differences and condemned the violence in Gaza, aligning with Sharif’s call for an immediate ceasefire. “Iran and Pakistan, as OIC members, stand united against the atrocities in Gaza,” he said.
Sharif was warmly welcomed at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, with a ceremonial guard of honor. Accompanied by a delegation including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, Sharif held constructive talks at Sa’dabad Palace.
The leaders also discussed Iran’s diplomatic efforts to ease South Asian tensions and expressed hope that Iran-US talks would promote regional stability. Sharif’s visit follows his trip to Turkey, where he thanked President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for Turkey’s steadfast support.
Pakistan’s diplomatic engagements signal a renewed focus on building strong regional alliances to promote peace, security, and economic prosperity.
