Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called on Afghanistan’s interim government to take decisive action against terrorist organizations operating from its soil, urging them to prevent Afghan territory from being used as a launchpad for attacks. Speaking to journalists in London, the PM emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to fostering peace with its neighbor while addressing pressing security concerns
Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s long-standing position, rooted in the Doha Agreement, that Afghanistan must not harbor groups like the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or the Islamic State-Khorasan Province (ISKP). “These groups have launched deadly assaults on innocent Pakistanis,” he said, paying tribute to the sacrifices of Pakistan’s armed forces, police, and citizens in the fight against terrorism. He urged Afghan leaders to act swiftly, stating, “Pakistan’s losses will not be in vain.”
The PM’s remarks came on the heels of a productive visit to Belarus, where he explored new avenues for economic cooperation. Sharif toured a Belarusian factory producing mining equipment, noting Pakistan’s vast mineral wealth as a potential area for collaboration. “This partnership could unlock significant opportunities,” he said, expressing optimism about mutual growth.
A key outcome of the visit was an agreement to provide 150,000 skilled Pakistani youth with employment opportunities in Belarus. Sharif stressed that the selection process would be transparent and merit-based, offering a lifeline to Pakistan’s workforce.
Turning to diaspora engagement, Sharif celebrated the launch of an overseas Pakistanis convention, calling it a “historic” moment. He praised the community for enhancing Pakistan’s global image and boosting the economy through billions in remittances. “This year, we’ve seen a remarkable rise in remittances,” he noted, pledging to address the diaspora’s concerns promptly.
Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s desire for brotherly ties with Afghanistan, advocating for cooperation over conflict. However, he underscored that peace depends on Afghanistan’s commitment to curbing terrorism. “We must live as good neighbors,” he said, appealing for unity.
The PM’s visit to London also marks his ongoing efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s international partnerships while addressing domestic and regional challenges head-on.
