Islamabad, April 22, 2025 – A persistent heatwave is sweeping across much of Pakistan, with dry and scorching conditions dominating the forecast, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). However, northern areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) are bracing for a shift, with rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds expected in the coming days.
Swelter in the South, Relief in the North
The PMD reports that southern districts of K-P, including Dera Ismail Khan and Bannu, are experiencing intense heat, with temperatures soaring to 39°C and 35°C, respectively. Peshawar also recorded a high of 35°C, contributing to uncomfortable conditions for residents. In contrast, cooler temperatures prevail in higher-altitude areas, with Kalam at a refreshing 16°C, Malam Jabba at 18°C, and Chitral at 22°C.
While the majority of the country faces arid weather, northern K-P districts such as Chitral, Dir, Kohistan, Mansehra, and Swat are likely to see rainfall accompanied by strong winds and occasional lightning. The PMD noted that these areas experienced light showers yesterday, with Dir recording 14mm of rain, Kalam 9mm, Drosh 4mm, and both Patan and Balakot receiving 3mm.
Advisory for Residents
With the heatwave showing no signs of relenting in southern K-P, authorities have urged residents to take precautions. “Stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and limit strenuous outdoor activities,” advised a local health official. The PMD forecasts similar weather patterns for the next 48 hours, with dry conditions persisting in most regions.
Looking Ahead
Weather experts predict that the northern showers may provide temporary relief to affected areas, potentially lowering temperatures and easing dry conditions. However, the southern plains are expected to remain under the grip of high temperatures, with no significant rainfall in sight.
Residents in rain-prone northern districts are advised to prepare for gusty winds and possible disruptions due to thunderstorms. The PMD will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as the weather evolves.
