The United States Embassy in Islamabad and the Chinese government have issued strong condemnations following a terrorist attack on the Jaffar Express train in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, which left multiple casualties and hundreds of passengers taken hostage. The assault, claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a U.S.-designated global terrorist group, has drawn international outrage and expressions of solidarity with Pakistan. The attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon in a remote mountainous region of Balochistan’s Kacchi district, when gunmen forced the train to stop and seized control, taking hundreds of passengers hostage. Pakistani security forces launched a swift response, engaging the assailants in an operation that continued into Wednesday. According to security sources, at least 30 terrorists were killed, and 190 passengers were successfully rescued, though the situation remains fluid as efforts to neutralize the remaining attackers persist.
In a statement posted on X, the U.S. Embassy expressed its unequivocal condemnation of the attack. “We strongly condemn the attack on the Jaffar Express train, and the hostage-taking of passengers in Kacchi, Balochistan, claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army,” the statement read. “We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the victims, their families, and all those affected by this horrific act. The Pakistani people deserve to live free from violence and fear.”
The U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Pakistan in its fight against terrorism, adding, “The United States will remain a steadfast partner of Pakistan in its efforts to ensure the safety and security of all its citizens. We stand in solidarity with Pakistan during this difficult time.”
Echoing the U.S. stance, China also condemned the attack in a separate statement. During a regular press conference on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said, “We strongly condemn this terrorist attack. China firmly opposes terrorism in any form. We will continue to firmly support Pakistan in combating terrorism, maintaining solidarity and social stability, and protecting the safety of the people.” Beijing’s response underscores its close alliance with Pakistan, a key partner in the region.
The Baloch Liberation Army, which claimed responsibility for the attack, has long been involved in an insurgency in Balochistan, targeting both civilian and military infrastructure in pursuit of greater autonomy or independence for the resource-rich province. The group’s designation as a global terrorist organization by the United States highlights its history of violent actions.
As security operations continue, the attack has renewed focus on the persistent challenge of militancy in Pakistan’s border regions. Both the U.S. and China’s statements signal robust international backing for Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism and restore stability.
